My name is Anders and I’m the CEO of Brattoo Propaganda Software. In my last email I focused on the Info Window in Photos and what could be seen and done there. Again, we received a lot of positive feedback but also some questions regarding automation of some tasks related to image metadata. Together, with the customers behind those requests, we have built a few small free apps that I will tell you more about later in this email. (And of course some more tips and tricks regarding Photos.) I hope you will enjoy it.

This newsletter and previous letters

New free apps section

As I told you above, we have received requests on how to automate some tasks in Photos or tasks related to photos. Those tasks might be tedious to work out manually but are easy for us to solve. The apps include a tool to set the Photos Titles based on filename (with or without file extension), a tool to copy and apply GPS coordinates between photos and finally a utility to set the correct file dates on image files based on the photo date stored in the metadata within the image files. Batch changing Date and Time

In my last email I stated that you can only change the date and time of one photo at a time. This is true when using the Info Window in Photos. However, as one of our readers correctly noted, you can batch change the date and time as well. To do this, select the photos you want to set the date and time on and then go to the menu Image->Adjust date and time… From here you can set the date of all selected images in one easy step.

Exporting photos

We have received some questions regarding exporting in Photos, that is quite understandable, it is confusing. Let’s start with the obvious, the File->Export menu. Here you can choose to export the unmodified original, which is exactly what it sounds like. It is the file as it was when you first imported it to Photos. Or, you can choose to Export Photo. When doing this, a new image file will be created. The good thing with this is that all the metadata that you have added in Photos like Title, Description, Keywords and Date will also be included in the metadata of the exported file.

Export by “drag’n drop”

You can also export images from Photos by dragging them to a Finder window. If you drag them they will be exported as a new image file as described above and they will be exported as high quality, full resolution jpeg images. If you have selected the Photos album in Photos then you can hold down the option key while you drag the image and instead of exporting a new image it will export the unmodified original. This only applies when you have selected the Photos album. From all other albums, like the All Photos album, they will be exported as new images regardless if you hold down the option key or not. Confusing?

Export to other applications

If you are a previous iPhoto user you might have noticed that in Photos you can no longer drag photos to the applications in the Dock. However, you can drag images to application windows like a new email in the Mail.app or Pages. It works the same way as when dragging to the Finder (export original with the option key as described previously in the letter).

Exporting and file dates

Some find it frustrating that after modifying the dates in Photos and exporting, that the dates of the exported files are not set to the dates set in Photos. This is correct, as the exported files are actually newly created files but it can be a problem when organizing files. It is easy to fix using our free tool Photodate To Filedate that grabs the creation date from the photos metadata and use it to update the created date of the file in the Finder.
